Join Kathryn Hunyor on a personal journey through birth, life, death and reincarnation in Japanese society as she explores a range of Japanese post-war avant garde artists.
From ancient Buddhist traditions to rapidly shifting social norms, learn how Japanese cultural attitudes to life and death shape art and how artists see every stage of life as a source of inspiration.
While the topic of death is often seen as taboo in the West, Japanese culture embraces death as a natural part of the cycle of life.
In this talk Kathryn Hunyor will look at Japanese art through the lens of post-war artists Eikoh Hosoe and Lee Ufan, contemporary artists Tatsuo Miyajima and Rei Naito, and grassroots collectives led by Hiroshi Fuji and Masato Nakamura.
