As part of the highly celebrated exhibition ‘Alphonse Mucha, Spirit of Art Nouveau’ at the Art Gallery of NSW, Kathryn Hunyor sat down with Curator Jackie Dunn and UTS Associate Professor Dr Toby Slade, to consider the influence of Japan on Mucha and his contemporaries.

Over an hour, they discussed Japonisme and the art nouveau movement and explored the extent to which it was in fact a two-way flow of ideas between Europe and Japan in the late 19th to early 20th centuries.
This wide-ranging conversation went right up to the here and now, covering the contemporary relevance of Mucha and the ongoing cross-influence between Japan, Europe and America in art and popular culture
