The curators of Crafting Life: Stories from the Japanese Studio Kathryn Hunyor, Olivier Krischer and Bic Tieu, came together to reflect on the dynamic resilience and enduring relevance of craft practices in contemporary Japan.

The discussion delved into how three Japanese makers are adapting to shifting conditions of materials, patronage, and environmental change, while preserving the tacit knowledge at the heart of their crafts. Drawing on examples of fine ceramics from Karatsu, maki-e lacquerware from Wajima and Kanazawa, and sashiko needlework from ÅŒtsuchi, the curators examined how these practices balance centuries of mastery with traditions of innovation—finding renewed significance in contemporary fields such as bespoke fashion and fine dining.
The panel featured short presentations on each of the makers represented in the exhibition, offering insights into the curatorial research and the connections between the three distinct craft traditions. The session concluded with a lively audience Q&A and was also livestreamed via The Japan Foundation, Sydney Facebook page.
