As a special event for the “Crafting Life” exhibition, The Japan Foundation, Sydney hosted celebrated Karatsu potter Yukiko Tsuchiya for a live demonstration and conversation at the wheel with curator and Japanese arts specialist Kathryn Hunyor, joined by designer and ceramicist Rina Bernabei.
Born in 1971 in the coastal city of Karatsu – long renowned for its ceramic traditions – Yukiko trained at the famous Nakazato kiln before establishing her own Yukiko Kiln in 2002. She has since exhibited widely across Japan and is recognised as one of the country’s leading Karatsu ceramicists.
In a studio-like setting, Yukiko demonstrated her distinctive approach to Japanese pot throwing, sharing insights into her techniques, creative practice and the influence of her natural surroundings. The conversation was translated into English for the audience.
The event complemented The Japan Foundation, Sydney’s exhibition Crafting Life: Stories from the Japanese Studio, which featured works by three Japanese artists, including Yukiko’s ceramics.
It was a rare opportunity for audiences to witness a respected Japanese craftsperson at work and to reflect on how Japan’s enduring ceramic traditions continue to inspire contemporary creativity.
