ARTSPEOPLE LAUNCHES TOKYO TOURS FROM APRIL 2017!
ArtsPeople are delighted to announce the launch of our Tokyo Culture Tours, a great way to explore Tokyo’s art, architecture and design on foot.
Planning a holiday to Japan? Visiting Tokyo for business?
Scratching beneath the surface of a city and navigating the most interesting sites is sometimes a challenge, especially in a mega-tropolis like Tokyo. So we’ve curated a range of day tours designed to engage, enrich and inspire those travelling to Tokyo.
Focusing on the unique art, design and architecture of this exciting city, our itineraries show how creativity and aesthetics permeate aspects of everyday life, and how traditional and modern Japanese culture has shaped Tokyo.
ArtsPeople’s tours are walking tours for those wanting to get into the ‘fine-grain’ of the city. We will experience it like a local, hopping on the subway and walking down the back alleys. Curated and lead by Kathryn Hunyor, ArtsPeople Co-Director and Tokyo local, you will gain a specialist understanding of Japanese creative culture across 3 different tour itineraries;
Tour 1: Aoyama / Omotesando
The City As Museum
This tour helps you soak up the aesthetic feast that is Aoyama & Omotesando. Arguably the world’s best outdoor museum for art, design and architecture, we visit buildings by Ito Toyo, Kuma Kengo, SANAA, Ando Tadao, Nakamura Hiroshi and other Japanese and international architects. This area is also home to smaller galleries, studios and shops, often tucked away in back alleys, that beautifully combine commerce and art.
Tour 2: Ginza / Marunouchi / Nihonbashi
Japanese Design Reborn
This walking tour of Ginza, Marunouchi and Nihonbashi is an intriguing mix of contemporary and historical, that feels like a trip down memory lane. The ongoing reinvention and restoration of the area creates an experience akin to a historical Japanese Disneyland. We explore topical buildings such as the Ichigokan and Kitte, recent urban developments exemplified by Coredo, and smaller contemporary art galleries. We consider the interplay of contemporary and historical commerce and culture, explore recent and ongoing restoration of traditional areas, and modern marketing, Japan-style.
Tour 3: Roppongi
The Art Of Living
This tour considers how ‘art permeates life’. While wandering Roppongi, one of Tokyo’s contemporary art and design hubs, we will see how refinement and sophistication have evolved over the centuries. We will visit the design museum Design Sight 21_21, smaller art and design galleries, and major museums such as the Suntory Museum of Art, Mori Art Museum and the National Art Center. Wandering through the new urban complex of Tokyo Midtown, part of the day can also be spent appreciating how the Japanese have elevated shopping to an artform.
